เรียนสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ (Learning Idioms)

1. All thumbs  หมายถึง  clumsy and awkward คือ อาการงุ่มง่าม  , ไม่ถนัด
    ตัวอย่าง :  When I wash dishes, I am all thumbs.

2. Eating  someone หมายถึง bothering and upsetting someone คือ ทำให้คนรำคาญ, ทำให้เบื่อ
    ตัวอย่าง :  What's been eating you lately ?  อะไรทำให้คุณรำคาญ

3. In a row  หมายถึง it happens that number of times without a break คือหลายๆครั้งติดต่อกัน
     ตัวอย่าง : I have won lottery five times in a row.


4.  Fishy  หมายถึง strange and suspicious คือ สิ่งที่น่าสงสัย แปลกๆไม่ปกติ (มาจากความหมายของปลาที่มีกลิ่นคาวๆ)
     ตัวอย่าง : Something is fishy about the accident.


5. On the tip of one’s tongue  หมายถึง know the word, but  just can't quite remember it at the moment

     คือ คำที่ติดอยู่ปลายลิ้น เหมือนว่าจะคิดออก  แต่ไม่สามารถพูดออกมาได้ในทันที
     ตัวอย่าง : His name is on the tip of my tongue.
 
 
6. Slip of the tongue  หมายถึง an accidental small mistake in your speech คือ การพลั้งเผลอพูดออกไป, หลุดปาก
    ตัวอย่าง : It was slip of the tongue to say the confidential matters.


7. Call it a day   หมายถึง  stop whatever we are doing  คือการหยุดทำงานนั้นๆ
    ตัวอย่าง : Let's call it a day and go home.


 
8. Fancy   หมายถึง want to have it or to do it  คือสิ่งที่ชอบ อยากได้ หรืออยากจะทำ
    ตัวอย่าง : Do you fancy going to see a movie tonight?


9. Go  astray    หมายถึง something gets lost while it is being taken or sentsomewhere

    คือ การส่งไปไม่ถึงที่หมาย ส่งไปผิดที่
    ตัวอย่าง : I don't understand how my e-mail went astray.


10. Over the moon  หมายถึง  very pleased about something คือความดีใจ หรือปลื้มใจสุดๆ
     ตัวอย่าง :  She was over the moon about/with her new car.


11. Ring a bell   หมายถึง reminds one of something คือ สะกิดใจ ,ทำให้นึกถึง , ทำให้จำได้
    ตัวอย่าง : I've never met Robin, but his name rings a bell.

12. Toss and turn   หมายถึง move restlessly in bed and cannot sleep properly

    คือ อาการพลิกไปมา กระสับกระส่าย นอนไม่หลับ
    ตัวอย่าง : I was tossing and turning all night.


13. To chill out  หมายถึง  to relax คือ ผ่อนคลาย (ที่วัยรุ่นชอบพูดกันว่า chill chill )

    ตัวอย่าง:  She always chills out by going to the park.


14.   A free ride  หมายถึง  something acquired without the ordinary effort or cost

     คือ ของฟรี, อะไรที่ได้มาโดยไม่ต้องมีต้นทุน
     ตัวอย่าง: I don’t want to get a free ride so I have to pay for public utility charges.

 
15. Once in a while หมายถึง sometimes, not very often  คือ ไม่บ่อยเท่าไร"
 
    ตัวอย่าง: Have you been to the new movie theater?
    No, only see movies once in a while. I usually stay home and watch TV.


16. Hit the hay   หมายถึง  go to bed; go to sleep คือ เข้านอน

    ตัวอย่าง: It's late, so I have to hit the hay.


17. An egghead  หมายถึง a very intelligent person ใช้กับคนที่ฉลาดมากๆ

     ตัวอย่าง:  She can make very good grades in school. She’s a real egghead.


18.  In ages  หมายถึง  a very long time  เวลานานมาก

     ตัวอย่าง: Have you seen John recently?  I haven't seen him in ages.


19. A  little  bird  told  me   เราจะใช้สำนวนนี้เพื่อจะบอกว่าเรารู้ข้อมูลมา   แต่ไม่ต้องการบอกแหล่งที่มาของข้อมูล

    ตัวอย่าง: A  little bird told me  some very interesting information about your boss.


20. Broke   หมายถึง  to have no money คือ ไม่มีเงินเลย (ถังแตก)

    ตัวอย่าง: I have to borrow some money  from my Dad. Right now, I’m broke.


21.  Sleep  on  it   หมายถึง  think about something before making a decision  คือการคิดก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจทำอะไร

     ตัวอย่าง:  That sounds like a good deal, but I’d like to sleep on it before I give you my final decision.
  

22. To go Dutch   หมายถึง  to share a cost of a meal

     คือการช่วยกันจ่ายค่าอาหาร (ต่างคนต่างจ่ายของตนเอง)

    ตัวอย่าง:  We agree to go Dutch for this party.


23. It's a piece of cake   หมายถึง  very easy คือง่ายมากๆ 

    ตัวอย่าง: I can do it myself. It's a piece of cake.


24.  Keep in touch   หมายถึง  keep contact คือการติดต่อกัน  ใช้สำหรับคนที่จะจากกันเป็นเวลานาน  เวลาที่จะจากกัน เราจะพูดให้เขาติดต่อกลับมา เรา
